Jennifer Welsh appointed as Chief Executive of Northern Trust

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Jennifer Welsh as Chief Executive of the Northern Trust.

Jennifer has been Interim Chief Executive since 1 April 2020 and has guided the organisation throughout the surge phase of COVID-19, following the retirement of Dr Tony Stevens.

She has been a Director within Northern Ireland’s Health & Social Care Services since 2005, and has significant experience in operational management, service and capital planning, capital development as well as a strong track record on safety, quality and governance. She has been Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Operations in the Northern Trust since December 2017.

Commenting on her appointment, Jennifer said:

“It is an honour and a privilege to be appointed to this position. I would like to acknowledge and pay tribute to the considerable contribution made by my immediate predecessor, Tony Stevens. He has built a strong foundation and in looking to the future, my aim will be to consider how the Northern Trust can best meet the health and social care needs of its population in an ever-changing environment. That will demand increasing agility and flexibility and my role as Chief Executive will be to drive the necessary change and transformation within the organisation, as well as working with our broader HSC partners, particularly our colleagues in General Practice.

“I am working with a superb team of committed and dedicated people. That team is itself made of up of many different teams, comprising many professions and disciplines. Creativity has been our strong point in terms of how we deliver health and social care services. I also know that we function much better when we all work together towards common goals. A perfect example of what can be achieved when we think in this way is our unified response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In that, I pay tribute to every single member of staff and I look forward to working with them all in doing the right things and in the right ways as we move forward.”
