British Institute of Cleaning Science Certificate Presentation

Sixty six staff from the Northern Trust Domestic Services Team have successfully completed the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICS) training and were presented with their accredited certificates at an event in the Causeway Hospital.

The recognition by BICS is an indication that staff have achieved the required standard of cleaning knowledge to be awarded a cleaning science qualification and to become a member of the Institute.

Cleanliness in wards, health and social care facilities, toilets and bathrooms is often how patients and visitors judge the Trust in relation to their overall treatment, so it is important that high standards are maintained.

The training is task based with each staff member undergoing a practical assessment which verifies their competence in completing each task. Staff were assessed on a range of tasks including chemical competence, safe use and care of machines, correct storage of equipment, and the control of body fluid contamination. All are skills that transfer directly into hospital, health and social care settings.

Maire Bermingham, Assistant Director of Corporate Support Services, presented staff with their certificates and said: “The Northern Trust is committed to raising the standards of education for domestic services staff and to build awareness of the important role they have in ensuring our hospitals and facilities are clean and safe, through professional standards and accredited training. Supporting the training of our staff to the BICS standard enables the Trust to provide a professional cleaning service to all its patients, clients, visitors and staff.

The training was delivered by Mrs Jillian Tweed, Interim Assistant Catering and Domestic Services Manager and Mrs Doreen Bell, Domestic Services Supervisor.

The British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICS) is the largest independent professional and educational body within the cleaning industry, with over 25,000 individual and corporate members around the world.
