Trust scoops scientist of the year award

Northern Health and Social Care Trust scientist Mr Robert Wilson has been awarded the prestigious Roche Biomedical Frontiers, Scientist of the Year award 2009.  Professor Frank Gannon, Director General SFI and Irish Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation presented Robert with his award at a ceremony in Dublin last week.

Robert who is from Bangor, is a specialist biomedical scientist in the Northern Trusts Cytopathology and Molecular Pathology Department at Antrim Area Hospital.  His paper on the use of automated DNA extraction and HPV testing, a technique that is now used in the Antrim hospital laboratory, ensured Robert was short listed from an extensive list of scientists from across Ireland.  Robert then had to present his paper to a panel of leading Irish molecular scientists.

The Northern Trust is leading the way not only in Northern Ireland, but also in the island of Ireland, having a fully CPA accredited specialist molecular pathology laboratory which specialises in the molecular testing of cancers.

The Consultant Head of Service Jackie Jamison is delighted and said, "The award to Robert is well deserved, he always works to the highest scientific standard and this presentation gives public acknowledgement of that.”
and Consultant Clinical Lead Jim Carson added, “It also gives recognition to the molecular pathology department and the calibre of work undertaken there"
