A Clean and Safe Environment for Residents

The Northern Health and Social Care Trust has just launched a cleaning manual for Trust owned residential homes, promoting an effective scientific approach to cleaning.  The manual is part of the Trust’s ongoing commitment to best practice in cleaning, which ensures high standards of hygiene are maintained in all Trust facilities.

Effective cleaning was the subject for discussion at a recent seminar to launch the manual entitled “A Clean and Safe Environment for Residents, who has responsibility?”  Cleaning in a healthcare environment is a very technically skilled job.  Residential homes have to be kept meticulously clean, as they house patients who are elderly or recovering and will have weakened immune systems.

The manual endorses a rigid and robust approach to scientific cleaning.  It details cleaning methods, what cleaning products to use and how often.  It also concentrates on cleaning processes required to assist in the prevention and control of infection.  It also provides information on the process for auditing cleaning standards in the Home.

Maire Bermingham, Assistant Director of Corporate Support Services said, “This is an excellent guide for managers and domestic staff in our residential homes.  It ensures that the cleaning regimes we have in place are consistent throughout the Trust.  The manual provides support to senior residential home and domestic staff and endorses the Trust’s commitment to combating the spread of infection”.

Brian Serplus, Head of Residential & Day Care Services, Supported Living & Housing Developments, said, “Our residents are entitled to expect everything in Trust facilities to be clean.  With this manual we are endeavouring to ensure that the highest possible standards of cleaninliness are achieved”.

“Cleanliness is everyone’s responsibility and this manual will support all staff who provide residential care”.

“Staff compliance with the manual will enable the Trust to provide a professional cleaning service to all its patients, clients, visitors and staff and ensure cleaning best practice is achieved”.
