The Child Health Department provides services including vaccination and immunisation scheduling, pre-school and school health surveillance and welfare foods distribution.

This team works with young people up to the age of 18 who have severe learning or physical disabilities or sensory impairments. The team liaises with a range of health professionals in the assessment and provision of specialist equipment for children with sensory impairments.

This team provides the initial assessment of referrals in the Coleraine area. The team responds to emergencies including child protection issues.

Combined Children’s Services

The Child Development Centre focuses on the needs of children. The multi-disciplinary team offers a combined approach to the diagnosis, assessment and management of treatment and provides information for both parents and children.

Community Dental Services

The Community Dental Service (CDS) provides screening and treatment for people who find it difficult to attend a family dentist. This includes such groups as, children in playgroups and primary school, residents in nursing homes, people with learning and/or physical disabilities, those with dental phobia, significant medical conditions and those who are housebound.

The CDS also undertakes Health Promotion and Public Health Functions and organises the Dental General Anaesthetic Service within the Causeway Area

The function of the unit is to care for critically ill patients suffering from acute coronary artery disease and a range of acute medical conditions. Individual advice on health promotion and cardiac rehabilitation is also provided to patients

This facility has 25 beds shared between GPs and the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Centre. Additional 4 beds have been opened for the Orthogeriatric Project.

Day Care creates a supportive environment where vulnerable persons can access services to help them maximise their potential for life in the community. Following a comprehensive assessment of need, each day centre member is involved in developing and agreeing an individual care plan which may include:

Specialist day care for persons with learning disability is offered at Millbrook, Mountfern and Rathmoyle Centres.

The Pavestone Centre is aimed at people with physical disabilities or mental health problems. Pavestone helps members engage in centre-based work activity and assesses work potential with a view to clients joining the general workforce.

The aim of these centres is to create a caring, supportive environment where members can be helped to build the lives they would wish for themselves in the community. The function of the Day Procedure Unit is to provide a patient-centred service for patients, who require surgical or medical procedures, which do not necessitate an overnight hospital stay.

The dementia team provides support at home to those suffering from dementia who otherwise would require residential care. They promote early diagnosis and provide clinical diagnostic assessment.

The Dermatology Department provides a comprehensive, specialist Dermatology Service to patients with skin complaints. This service is provided on an out-patient and in-patient basis.

The diabetic service is delivered by a multi-disciplinary team including Medical Staff and a specialist Diabetes Nurse. Care is provided on an out-patient and in-patient basis.

Domiciliary Services offer a two-strand approach to home care which enables people to remain within the community whilst maintaining a quality of life.

This service is responsible for the registration, monitoring and inspection of Day Care provision for children under 12 years of age in the Causeway area. The service also has an active role in Community development.

A comprehensive out-patients ENT service is provided to adults and children by a visiting consultant from United Hospitals Trust.

Family Placement Team

This service undertakes the recruitment, training, assessment and management of foster carers and adoptive parents. The Family Placement Team provides counselling to young people and adults, including adoptive parents who are experiencing difficulties in parenting which are linked to their child’s adopted status.

This is a developing project aiming to provide support to care leavers and to vulnerable young people who are aged over 16 years, to enable them to make the transition to adult independence successfully. Causeway Laboratory provides routine and emergency services in microbiology, clinical chemistry, haematology and blood bank. The service is provided to all Trust hospitals and local GPs.

Social work team providing a service to this programme including respite.

This team provides social work and nursing care to adults with a learning disability.

Looked After Children Team

This service provides a social work service to children and young people who have been “Looked After” or “Accommodated” by the Trust for over a year.

The role of the social worker is to:

Seek to return the child to their birth family or find a legal, permanent alternative.

Visit the child to monitor well being and listen to their views.

Encourage the pursuit of hobbies/interests and possibly arrange funding for extra tuition.

Work with them in preparation for independent living as they move towards adulthood.

A second team, with the same remit will be created in early 2004

The Maternity Ward in Causeway Hospital provides facilities and staff to deliver ante-natal and post-natal care to mothers and new-born babies in a safe environment.

This service provides assessment, treatment and rehabilitation for adults suffering from mental illness through counselling, therapy and group work. It also attempts to create a greater understanding of mental illness within the community by providing information and advice.

Neurological services are concerned with the nervous system and its disorders and are provided on an out-patient basis by visiting consultants.

Nutrition & Dietetics

The Nutrition & Dietetics Service provides assessment, treatment and information for people on a wide range of nutrition related problems. Dieticians specialise in nutritional assessment which is used together with clinical information to prescribe appropriate dietary treatment. Diet is the cornerstone of treatment in many conditions such as diabetes, coeliac disease, malnutrition, renal and hepatic diseases and certain paediatric disorders. Their overall aim is to educate patients to make informed food choices required for the dietary management of their condition and ensure nutritional needs are met.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapists treat people of all ages with mental, physical and social problems with a view to improving their everyday function and prevent disability. This service assesses, diagnoses and treats diseases and disorders of the eye. The service is provided on an out-patient basis by a visiting consultant.

Oral Surgery

A visiting consultant provides this service on an out-patient basis. It may involve the removal of teeth and the repair and treatment of other oral problems, such as tumours and fractures.

The assessment, diagnoses and treatment of a wide range of dental problems requiring the movement, adjustment and in some cases the extraction of teeth. A visiting consultant provides this service.

Orthopaedics

This service involves in the preservation and ‘restoration of function’ of the musculoskeletal system that includes treatment of spinal disorders and peripheral nerve lesions. A visiting consultant provides this service.

The Orthoptic Department assess, diagnose and treat visual function problems, abnormalities of eye movements and dysfunction of eye co-ordination in all age groups on an out-patient basis.

This team provides a social work base and rehabilitation service to adults who have a physical disability and or a sensory impairment.

This service is involved in the diagnosis and management of people with a broad range of physical problems. Physiotherapists use manipulation, therapeutic handling and exercise. The Psychiatric Liaison services provides assessment for those presenting to medical wards or A&E with mental ill health and/or deliberate self harm.

This is an inpatient unit within Causeway hospital.

Radiology

The Department offers a wide range of diagnostic services to the patient which are available to hospital Consultants, Physicians, GPs and Community Health Doctors including cases from the A&E Department. The centralised X-ray service provides 24 hour radiographic cover to all Departments and is also responsible for the mobile X-ray equipment including image intensifiers.

Interventional radiological techniques are also carried out with biopsies under fluoroscopic, Ultrasound and CT control being performed.

Rathmoyle Resource Centre

This service provides care for mental health patients, people with learning disabilities, the elderly and head injury patients. Staff provide assessment, respite care, physiotherapy, speech and language clinics and a college to educate patients as well as providing outdoor activities such as horse riding.

The Rehabilitation Services offers a service to elderly patients, those recovering from stroke and other patients requiring rehabilitation therapy. The service provides multi-disciplinary assessment and treatment to meet the individual needs of patients.

Rheumatology

The assessment, diagnoses and treatment of diseases of the joints, muscles, and connective tissues. A visiting Rheumatologist provides this service on an out-patient basis.

A Community Hospital offering care to patients who need immediate treatment, convalescence and/or rehabilitation. The hospital also offers palliative care and provides accommodation for the Hospice Homecare Team and Cruse Bereavement Care.

The purpose of this respite service is to:

Enhance the quality of a child’s life by providing opportunities to make new friends and the chance to enjoy new experiences

Offer parents a period of rest during which they can spend some time together or with other members of the family, thereby enabling them to cope better with the demands of disabilities.

Tissue Viability

The Tissue Viability Nurse provides clinical advice and education on the management of all types of wounds and tissue damage in adults and children. Referrals are accepted from all members of the multidisciplinary team and works in collaboration with them to provide evidence based care to patients with compromised tissue viability. At present she visits clients both in hospital and in their homes. However the service will be developed to provide wound care clinics across the Trust allowing the needs of a greater number of clients to be met.

Treatment Room Nursing

Nurses apply dressings, give injections, remove stitches following surgery or day procedures, perform blood and urine tests and administer emergency aid if the GP is unavailable.

Registered Nurses provide skilled nursing care to mobile patients. They perform technical screening tasks and focus on health promotion and disease prevention activity.
