Rheumatology

Rheumatology is a speciality which covers a diverse range of disorders including all forms of inflammatory arthritis such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, connective tissue disease, for example, Lupus, metabolic bone disease such as Osteoporosis, Vasculitis, Osteoarthritis and soft tissue rheumatic complaints. Many of the conditions treated are linked with the immune system attacking different body tissues.

Location

The Trust-wide Rheumatology service is based at Antrim Area Hospital.

The Service has four consultant rheumatologists, three nurse specialists, a team of Trust-wide dedicated Allied Health Professionals, and a specialist registrar in rheumatology.

Inpatient Rheumatology services are provided at Antrim Area Hospital.

Outpatient clinics are held at Braid Valley Hospital, Ballymena; Causeway Hospital, Coleraine; Mid Ulster Hospital, Magherafelt; Moyle Hospital, Larne and Whiteabbey Hospital.

A Rheumatology Day Unit is located at Fern House on the Antrim Area Hospital site. This unit provides Biological Therapies (new immunosuppressant drugs) to patients with serious forms of arthritis.

The Service has an integrated patient education programme for newly diagnosed arthritis sufferers and also a nurse-led patient advice helpline.

Several consultants can perform musculoskeletal ultrasound examination at clinics, which allows for earlier diagnosis of arthritis and permit more accurate monitoring of response to treatment.
