Occupational Therapy Rheumatology Outpatient Service

The Occupational Therapy Rheumatology Outpatient Service can:

1. Advise on 

    - Looking after joints, to reduce pain and maintain joint integrity 
    - Coping with fatigue 
    - Managing everyday tasks in a manner that does not provoke pain -home/work/leisure 
      activities 
    - Maintaining hand range of movement and strength using hand home exercise programs 
    - Equipment to maintain independence, function for work, home and leisure activities

2. Teach 
   
    - Joint protection techniques 
    - Relaxation techniques to help manage pain, fatigue and stress 
    - Fatigue Management skills

3. Provide
 
    - Equipment to help with difficulties around the home 
    - Commercial and custom made hand splints to help relieve pain/inflammation whilst promoting 
      hand function

Conditions the Occupational Therapy Rheumatology Outpatient Service can help 
    
    - All types of inflammatory arthritis i.e. Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Anklyosing 
      spondylitis 
    - Osteoarthritis of fingers and thumb 
    - Polymyalgia Rheumatica 
    - Systemic Lupus Erythematosus 
    - Scleroderma 
    - Polymyositis 
    - Dermatomyositis 
    - Gout 
    - Fibromyalgia 
    - Musculo Skeletal Conditions ie: Focal hand dystonia 
    - Hypermobility in hand 
    - Early trigger finger 
    - RSI type conditions – de Quervains 
    - Carpal Tunnel 
    - Tenosynovitis of wrist and hand

Referral to the service

Referrals will be accepted from: 
    - Rheumatology multi-disciplinary team 
    - GP 
    - Physiotherapy 
    - Community and Acute Occupational Therapy 
    - Social Work 
    - Nursing 
    - Self-referral from patients who are currently attending a Northern Trust Rheumatologist

How to refer

Referrals can be made using the common referral form, Rheumatology Clinic Letter or the Occupational Therapy referral form. It should be posted or emailed to an appropriate site (addresses below).

Please include reason for referral. Current diagnosis must be within scope of rheumatology.
