Share the Care Scheme - adults

Share the Care is a Trustwide family based provision that offers short breaks and permanent adult placements to adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and sensory impairment.

The Share the Care Scheme offers three types of service:

  1. Short breaks – This can be a day, a few days or a week depending on the assessed need. This allows the adult to get a break from their normal routine and gives the main carer the opportunity to have a break from their caring role.
  2. Permanent Adult Placement – The Scheme assess families who can then provide a permanent placement within their family home for Adults with learning disabilities as an alternative to residential care
  3. Homebased breaks – were a homebased carer can go to the clients home. They can provide a sitting service to enable the main carers to go out for a meal or to shop or indeed just to offer a few hours of rest and relaxation. The host carer can take the client out to participate in an activity or for a walk.

The Share the Care Team helps approve host family carers (ordinary individuals from the local community) to share their home and time with someone in need.

For a family caring for someone with a disability, planned short stays can be a welcome break from the sometimes emotional and physically draining role of caring for a loved one. For the client using the service, short stays and homebased support represent a refreshing change, the chance to meet new people, and do things they may not have the opportunity to do otherwise. For permanent adult placements life in an ordinary family home is very different from that of a residential home, nursing home or hospital. The client will have a room of their own, privacy, a space for their belongings and the warmth and security of a stable friendly environment. The everyday activities of family life offer many opportunities for learning new skills of daily living and making new friendships. This helps to increase confidence and independence.
