Adult Centres

The Northern Trust’s building-based day care services are provided in Adult Centres. They are there to meet the needs of people with a learning disability who have complex health care needs, challenging behaviours and/or specific vulnerabilities.

At each Centre, there is a team of specially trained day care staff assisted by a multi-disciplinary team who provide a person centred approach to planning care which makes sure the specific and complex needs of each person are met in this environment.

Multi–disciplinary support includes physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, support from social workers, challenging behaviour service, community nursing and dental services.

Structured activities and therapies include:

  • Support with daily care needs
  • Drama
  • Sensory stimulation
  • Rebound
  • Art and craft
  • Recreational activities
  • Music
  • Advocacy groups

Referrals to an Adult Centre are made by the social work team. Each referral is discussed at an admissions panel consisting of representatives from the multi-disciplinary team to make sure each individual is offered the most suitable placement. An Adult Centre Plan is then completed using a person centred approach and is reviewed regularly to ensure each individual’s care needs are met.
