Direct Assessment Unit

General Practitioners (GPs) can speak directly with medical staff at the Acute Assessment Unit in Antrim Area Hospital to receive specialist advice and, if required, to arrange for a referral to the Unit for assessment, diagnostics and management.

There is also one phone number where GPs can access a senior clinician for advice between 9.00 am - 6.00 pm relating to the following specialities:

  • General / Acute Medicine
  • Nephrology
  • Diabetes
  • Cardiology
  • Surgery – for surgical patients with a post operative wound infection who had surgery in the past 30 days in Antrim
  • Gynaecology

Access to this Unit is by GP referral only. Patients can arrive at the Acute Assessment Unit up until 5.00pm. If a patient is unable to attend before this time they can be offered an appointment the following day. Ideally, patients should attend the Acute Assessment Unit as soon as possible after the referral is made to prevent delays in assessing them.

In addition to contact for urgent assessment, there is a Rapid Access Medical Clinic. This is a service for patients who do not require same day assessment but do require a review and assessment within one or two days. This clinic can be accessed by contacting the Assessment Unit.

The Acute Assessment Unit can be contacted through Antrim Area Hospital switchboard on 028 9442 4000.
