Nutrition and Dietetic Services

The Nutrition and Dietetic Service provides assessment, treatment and information for people who have a wide range of nutrition related problems. Dietitians employed by the Northern Trust will have completed an approved and recognised qualification in Nutrition and Dietetics and are registered to practice with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Registrations may be checked on www.hpc-uk.org.

Dietitians specialise in nutritional assessment which is used together with clinical information to determine a nutritional diagnosis and therefore to prescribe appropriate dietary treatment. Their overall aim is to educate patients to make informed food choices required for the dietary management of their condition and make sure nutritional needs are met. The Northern Trust Nutrition and Dietetic service strive to be service user focussed and our vision is “Delivering nutritional expertise to all”.

Diet is the cornerstone of treatment in many conditions such as diabetes, coeliac disease, malnutrition and renal disease and certain paediatric disorders. Services are available across acute and community sites, covering a wide variety of clinical specialties including critical care, diabetes, oncology, paediatrics and renal. Several dietitians are based within multidisciplinary teams including physical and sensory disability, learning disability, home from hospital and the Condition Management Programme.

Referral process

People may be referred to the Service by any healthcare professional, including their GP or Consultant. Once a referral letter has been received for a patient, they will be written to and invited to contact the Service by telephone to arrange a convenient appointment. Should they fail to respond to this request, they will be discharged from the service.

If an appointment is being arranged with the Nutrition and Dietetic Service, it is hoped that you will be seen within 13 weeks upon receipt of the referral. Patients will be discharged from the Service if they do not respond to the initial invite; they no longer meet the access criteria; if their treatment is complete; if they do not attend an appointment or if they cancel on two occasions.
