The Physiotherapy Service assesses and treats people of all ages with physical problems caused by illness, accident or ageing.

The Service is provided in both hospital and community settings and has specialist practitioners in the following areas:

Physiotherapists use skills in clinical measuring, manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, movement and electrotherapy to treat patients.

Acute Physiotherapy Service (Inpatient service)

This is an inpatient physiotherapy service which includes the following areas:

There is an on-call service, 24/7, in Causeway Hospital and Antrim Area Hospital for emergency respiratory patients. This service can be only accessed after medical staff have assessed the patient and they are likely to deteriorate without physiotherapy intervention.

There is also a limited 7 day physiotherapy service to help facilitate suitable patients to be discharged at the weekend on Antrim site.

Physiotherapy Service (Outpatient Service)

This outpatient service includes musculo-skeletal, rheumatology, orthopaedics, and women’s health which includes ante-natal, post-natal and gynaecology and is provided at the sites listed below.

The service is mainly provided from 8.30am – 5.00pm, Monday to Friday.

The outpatient physiotherapy department operates a central booking system, based in the Robinson Memorial Hospital, Ballymoney, for the Northern Trust.

Physiotherapy Service (Mental Health)

The Trust provides physiotherapy services to people who are experiencing mental health problems. This service is provided at Holywell Hospital and Ross Thompson Unit, Causeway Hospital (Inpatients). It is also provided to people in their own homes and at Trust owned and independent residential facilities.

Physiotherapy Service (Domiciliary)

This service is provided to patients living at home or in a residential or nursing home who are unable to travel to physiotherapy departments due to their physical condition/functional ability to attend an outpatient appointment.

 Community Rehabilitation

The Trust has a number of teams which offer services to people in the community: Community Respiratory Teams and the Rehabilitation Physiotherapy Service which is part of the Recovery Service.

These teams provide services from 9.00am - 5.00pm, Monday - Friday.

The service is provided from different locations in the Trust: 

    •    the patient's own home 
    •    nursing and residential homes 
    •    community hospitals

Physiotherapy Services (Paediatric)

Paediatric physiotherapists work with children and young people of all ages from premature babies to adolescents to ensure optimal physical function and development.

The service is provided in the Child Development Centres in Antrim and Ballymoney, schools for children with special needs, mainstream schools, children’s homes, respite facilities, some outpatient departments, paediatric wards at Antrim Area and Causeway Hospitals and the neonatal unit at Antrim Area Hospital.

The service is available from 9.00am - 5.00pm, Monday - Friday.

Appropriate referrals are accepted from any of the following health professionals: 

    •     Hospital Consultant or Registrar, Community Paediatricians 
    •     General Practitioners 
    •     Allied Health Professionals 
    •     Community Children’s Nurse

If you are unsure whether a referral is required please contact your local paediatric physiotherapy team to speak to a physiotherapist who will be happy to help and provide information and advice leaflets as appropriate.

Physiotherapy Lymphoedema Services

Lymphoedema is a swelling that develops as a result of an impaired lymphatic system. Patients will be seen in the physiotherapy outpatients department which is closest to their home.

The service is available Monday - Friday, 8.30am – 4.30pm.

Physiotherapy for Adults with Learning Disabilities

Physiotherapy staff provide a service to adults with learning disabilities in day centres, residential units, respite facilities, council leisure facilities and some out-patients departments.

The service is provided Monday - Friday, 9.00am - 5.00pm.
