Pre-Operative Assessment Service

The Pre-Operative Assessment Service assesses patients who are currently on a waiting list to undergo elective surgery or day procedures.

The service aims to ensure that all patients are fully fit for anaesthetic if required, prepared for their procedure and understand what is involved.

Following the decision to treat, the patient will receive a health screening questionnaire to complete. The pre-op assessment nurses screen the questionnaire to determine the most appropriate action to be taken to prepare the patient for their procedure. This may involve a phonecall to the patient or a scheduled appointment with a pre-assessment nurse or anaesthetist to perform tests and discuss issues relating to the patients health.

The patient and/or carer will be fully informed about the procedure, given a point of contact for information to alleviate anxiety and advised regarding improving their health and the outcome of surgery.
