Carers Group offers support to carers in the Ballymena and Causeway areas

Wilson House Day Care Centre, in conjunction with the Carer’s Trust, have recently held a very successful Health and Wellbeing Group to support carers in the Ballymena and Causeway areas.

The group met over an 8 week period and involved 14 carers. The aim of the group was to ensure that information, advice and practical support was available to carers who can often feel isolated in their caring duties.

Evaluations from the group show that carers found it to be informative, supportive and beneficial to their caring role.

The group fits in with Transforming Your Care whereby carers are supported in the community and better able to fulfil their caring duties, this enables people to remain in their own homes longer.

Wilson House Day Care Centre will run a similar group in the autumn to ensure more carers receive the support and advice they need.

Cheryl Donaldson, Day Care Worker from the Northern Trust, worked with the Carers Trust to put the Group together. Cheryl commented: “Carers provide an extremely important role in the community and the Trust feels strongly about providing them with the resources they need in order to do that. As well as providing advice and support the Programme was also beneficial from a social point of view as the carers role can often be a lonely one. Our participants really enjoyed the group and have hopefully forged new friendships which will provide them with ongoing support in their role.”
