Self check-in for Outpatient Departments at Causeway Hospital

Patients attending Causeway Hospital Outpatient Departments can now check themselves in for their appointment, reducing the time they will have to wait. Self check-in is carried out using kiosks which will allow patients to book in for their appointment without having to queue to see a receptionist. Patients simply confirm their gender and date of birth when prompted and the system will ask for confirmation of further details.

The kiosks are equipped with built-in printers, which will print a ticket containing the patient’s call number, appointment time and location. Patients can then take a seat in the designated waiting area as identified on the ticket. The call screens are located in each waiting area. When the doctor or nurse is ready to see the patient, an audio visual message is sent to the call screen. This message shows the patients call number and the room in which their appointment will take place.

Megan West, Assistant Director, welcoming the new system said, “These new kiosks are really simple to use and will enhance patients’ experiences in our Outpatient Departments. Step by step instructions take you through each stage of checking-in after you enter your details on the touch screen. You can only read what is on the screen if you are standing right over it so it is very private. Outpatients is the first point of contact with the Trust for many patients, so the introduction of these kiosks will give patients an improved service.”

Andrea Alcorn, General Manager, Patient Access for the Northern Trust said, “The system will be fully supported by reception staff who will help patients use the self check-in for the first time. It has been welcomed by the Outpatient Department staff who have been fully involved in the planning and implementation process.”
