Mountfern Centre celebrates 40 years

This September (2nd), Mountfern Centre in Coleraine will celebrate 40 years of supporting adults with learning disability. Part of the Northern Trust, Mountfern is a 55 place centre that provides day care support services for adults aged 19 and over with a wide range of learning disabilities.

Mountfern initially opened in 1976 with 35 members and five staff and today has over 100 members and 35 staff over three locations. Today, the Centre offers a range of activities including sports and recreation, education and training opportunities, supported employment through the day opportunities team and therapeutic and sensory stimulation.

Providing Day Care Services gives Service Users gives the opportunity to come to a safe, structured environment where they can make new friends and learn new skills as well as providing structure and purpose to their day.

The Centre provides opportunities for service users to take part in both group and individual activities which are diverse and varied, engaging, purposeful, enjoyable and promote healthy living. Clients are encouraged to take part in as many activities as possible and are supported in developing their skills and abilities.

The Trust also provides services in to Mountfern as necessary including physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, nutrition and dietetic support, clinical psychologist, social workers and the positive support team which provides support advice and guidance when setting up programmes of care for service users with challenging behaviours.

Mountfern also provides much needed breaks for families and carers.
Staff are delighted to have been providing support to young people with a learning disability for over four decades and would like to thank all those clients and families who have played a part in the Centre’s history.
