Northern Trust staff recognised at RCN Nurse of the Year Awards

Seven members of the Northern Trust nursing family were finalists at the recent RCN Nurse of the Year Awards out of thirteen categories – three of whom were named winners.

The awards ceremony took place on 7 June 2018 at the Culloden Hotel, Holywood.

Craig Chambers was selected as joint winner for the Health Care Support Worker award for his commended work in the falls team, making a difference to older people in the community.

Bernie Carlin, family nurse practitioner, impressed the judges with her leadership and commitment to young mothers therefore winning the Public Health award.

Mary Kane jointly won the esteemed Patients Choice award as nominated by a young lady within her care, who referred to Mary as more than a nurse, but a friend.

Runners up in their categories were Sister Jackie Williams in recognition of her exceptional skills in person centered care for the Dementia Nurse award, Jillian Scott who has lead on offering specialist diabetes advice to clients with a learning disability, and Kathy Goumas for her years of dedicated service to people with addictions.

Jackie Kearns, Inflammatory Bowel Disease Nurse Specialist, has been an ambassador for the nursing profession through challenging traditional clinical practice using research. Jackie has transformed the lives of patients and their families in her care and was a finalist in the prestigious Nurse of the Year award.

Mrs Eileen McEneaney, Executive Director of Nursing and User Experience said “We’re delighted that so many of our staff were recognised for their valuable contribution at these awards, as we recognise their contribution daily. It’s brilliant when we can reward our colleagues for going above and beyond for patients, and these awards are a fantastic opportunity to give the nursing profession in Northern Ireland the chance to celebrate its success.”
