The Northern Trust employs around 12,000 people.  We have a highly skilled and professional workforce working across many different hospital and community sites. The Trust provides a range of health and social care services to a population of approximately 479,000 people across a geographical area of 1,733 square miles, making it the largest geographical trust in Northern Ireland.

Our highly skilled and professional workforce provides acute services through two hospitals (at Antrim Area and Causeway) and community-based health and social care services from four localities which together include approximately 300 facilities including day centres, health centres and residential homes.

Outpatients services are provided from Antrim Area, Causeway, Whiteabbey, Mid-Ulster and Moyle Hospitals and Braid Valley Care Complex, as well as from a range of community settings such as Ballymena Health and Care Centre.

We offer a large number of career opportunities, with great scope for ongoing advancement and development within the organisation. Flexible working

The Trust recognises that the opportunity to work flexibly can greatly improve the ability of staff to balance home and work responsibilities. This, in turn, benefits HSCNI as it enables us to retain skilled staff and to reduce recruitment costs.

All employees have the opportunity to request flexible working from the first day of their employment, regardless of their role, band or service they work in.  A range of work-life balance and flexible working arrangements are available within all HSC Organisations including, fixed working patterns to give certainty over hours worked and/or location, part-time working (any number of hours under 37.5), flexi-time around core hours including staggered start and finish times, compressed/elongated hours, average hours working patterns to allow a set number of hours to be averaged over an agreed period, term-time working, job-share, flexible retirement, team self-rostering, homeworking and career breaks.

Successful applicants are encouraged to discuss with their manager what flexible working provisions may be available in the role they are taking up, prior to commencing employment, to help them achieve a positive work/life Balance.

To support this, we have:

  • Assistance to study – Encouraging staff to develop through training and education, with guidance on how to access support.
  • Coaching within the Northern Trust

Coaching is all about thought-provoking conversations that inspire people to maximise their personal and professional potential. This can be done in a one-to-one setting with a Trust coach, or by using a ‘coach approach’ when interacting with colleagues and team members. Coaching conversations are goal-oriented, and can help unlock potential, support you to achieve ambitions and goals, and inspire you to think about ways to overcome challenges.

Within our Trust we have a network of formally trained coaches, who have all passed the ILM Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring. Our coaches come from all different directorates and divisions throughout the Trust, and regularly attend supervision sessions to keep their practice up to date and ethical. Unlike mentoring, your coach doesn’t need to be senior to you, nor do they need a working knowledge of your area of work and expertise. Some people think coaching is reserved for managers, but the truth is that all of us can benefit from coaching.
