Laurel House Chemotherapy Unit
Chemotherapy at Laurel House
Are you going to be having cancer treatment at Laurel House? Want to know what to expect? Then please watch our walk-through video to find out more.
Laurel House Chemotherapy Unit provides an outpatient service and a day unit for the delivery of chemotherapy, and other treatments for the care of patients with cancer or haematology conditions. This means you do not stay overnight. There are nurses, doctors, pharmacists, support workers and other team members in the unit who are there to help you on your cancer journey.
In November 2024 Laurel House Chemotherapy Unit will move to a 2 Stop Care Treatment Model. This change is necessary to ensure the best possible care for all our patients. This change will help to increase capacity within the unit and reduce wait times for our patients.
The 2 Stop Care Treatment Model will involve patients visiting the unit on two consecutive days:
- Day 1: This contact may be face to face or over the telephone. Where appropriate your height and weight is taken and blood samples are reviewed/taken or repeated if necessary. These checks are necessary to ensure the correct treatment dose is prescribed. If your blood test results are OK you will be asked to return the following day to receive your chemotherapy. In the meantime, your drugs are made up especially for you, and they must be exactly right – this can take up to a couple of hours.
- Day 2: The following day you return to Laurel House to receive your treatment, this will have been prepared in advance of your arrival. This will help to reduce the length of time you will be in Laurel House.
If your blood tests are not ok, your clinical team may decide to delay your chemotherapy. If so, you will be given a new appointment as guided by your clinical team.
