Laboratory Service

The Laboratory provides a wide range of routine and specialist laboratory services from Antrim Area and Causeway Hospitals for General Practitioners (GP) and hospitals within the northern area.

Services at Antrim Area Hospital

Clinical Chemistry, Haematology / Blood Transfusion, Microbiology, Cytopathology / Molecular Pathology and Histopathology.

Services at Causeway Hosptial

Clinical Chemistry and Haematology / Blood Transfusion.

Hours of opening

Clinical Chemistry, Haematology / Blood Transfusion and Microbiology provide a routine (Monday – Friday, 9am – 8pm; Saturday, Sunday, Public Holidays, 9am-5pm) and an emergency service (Monday – Friday 8pm – 9am; Saturday, Sunday, Public Holidays, 5pm – 9am)

Cytopathology / Molecular Pathology and Histopathology provide a routine service Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm.

The laboratory team consists of consultant pathologists, biomedical scientists, healthcare assistants, administration and portering staff.

The laboratories actively engage with external inspection bodies; they are accredited with UKAS UK ltd, compliant with the Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency and licensed by the Human Tissue Authority. The quality of the service provided is assured by participation in National External Quality Assurance Schemes and rigorous internal quality control of all aspects of work.
