Helping Older People get Online and Stay Online

Description: Supporting active engagement, this Big Lottery funded project aims to help older people get online through the use of tablets. This is being provided to Older People Living in Sheltered Accommodation over a period of 10-12 weeks and includes a benefit check. It has a specific focus on helping people access information about their rights and entitlements and is unique in that it utilises volunteers to empower elder people with their digital experience.

Stepping Towards Enhanced Postural Stability (STEPS)
Provider: Northern Health and Social Care Trust
Description: STEPS is a 16 week exercise and education programme. It is designed to help prevent falls and fractures, and promote independent living. The programme is available to adults over 55 years of age. General Practitioners and any trust health and social care professional can make referrals.

Active Communities Programme – Free Sport and Activity Taster Sessions
Description: Funded by Sport Northern Ireland, this programme aims to increase participation in sport and physical recreation, especially amongst under-represented groups including older people. Thanks to this investment they now have specialist coaches and activity leaders to deliver a range of activities including chair based aerobics, dance, boccia, and new age curling.

Newtownabbey Senior Citizens Forum
Provider: Independent Community Group
Description: The aim of the Newtownabbey Senior Citizens Forum is to improve the health and wellbeing of people over 50 years in the Newtownabbey area. It has been delivering a weekly programme with, e.g. bowls, walking, healthy living classes etc.

Description: Sixmile Leisure Centre Over 50s group provides a wide range of options from aerobics to aqua-fit for people aged 50 years and over. People can choose an activity. At the end of the session there is tea and coffee.
Location: Sixmile Leisure Centre, Ballyclare
Frequency: The class runs on Mondays and Thursdays from 10 am – 12 noon all year round
