Routine Breast Screening

The Northern Trust is continuing to provide routine breast screening services for individuals in the Northern Trust area. Invitations will be sent to those eligible and of screening age (50 – 70 years). Appointments may not offered at your usual location, please check your appointment letter carefully for details.

If you choose not to attend your appointment, please contact the Breast Screening Unit at Antrim Area Hospital so we can offer this appointment to someone else – phone 028 9442 4425 or email breast.screening@northerntrust.hscni.net.

Breast Screening Programme

In Northern Ireland, all individuals aged 50-70 years who are registered with a GP as a female, are automatically invited for breast screening once every three years.

The Breast Screening Programme is a rolling programme where all individuals should receive their first appointment between their 50th and 53rd birthday. Eligible people within the Northern Trust area will be sent an invitation to attend a Mobile Unit for breast screening.

The Trust has two state of the art Digital Mobile Breast Screening Units. Digital units allow mammograms to be viewed instantly by the radiographer, this helps reduce the number of people who need to be recalled for technical reasons. The digital unit also permits those with breast implants to be screened at their nearest mobile location.

Please contact the Breast Screening Centre at Antrim Area Hospital if:

  • you have a physical disability or have difficulty climbing steps and we can arrange a longer appointment time for you. The mobile units have a lift system which will enable individuals who have difficulty with stairs or are wheelchair users to attend for screening.
  • you have had a mammogram within the last 6 months, are pregnant or breastfeeding, as you may be advised to delay breast screening.
  • you are the carer someone with special needs who has been invited for screening
  • you require an interpreter

If you are over 70, you can make your own self-referral appointment every three years. All you need to do is contact the Breast Screening Unit by telephone 028 9442 4425, or email: Breast.Screening@northerntrust.hscni.net.

If you have any concerns about unusual changes to your breasts, please speak with your GP as soon as possible. They will be able to refer you to a symptomatic breast clinic at Antrim Hospital if required.
