A service user at Newtownabbey Base has proven that dreams do come true as she celebrates the publication of her first book.

The Magic Book and Other Stories’ features a collection of short stories for children, which transport the reader to fantasy lands all inspired by Siobhan Stephens’ unique imagination.

With a life-long love for writing and creative expression, paralleled by a learning disability diagnosis in her 20s and recovery from a kidney transplant, the book’s completion is a huge personal achievement for Siobhan.

To mark its publication, she was joined by family and friends for a very special launch event and book signing.

Talking about her passion for creative writing, Siobhan said: “Writing helps me to express myself and it’s an outlet for my imagination.

“I’m always writing and drawing when I’m at the Base, and our Base Co-ordinator Gerri has always shown me great encouragement.

“She knew I always wanted to write a book and with her support I’ve achieved my goal and shown that anything is possible.”

Phenomenal

Northern Trust Day Opportunities Team Leader Liz Keenan said: “All of us from the East Antrim Day Opportunities Programme are extremely proud of Siobhan.’’

“She is a very creative person who inspires other Base members with her enthusiasm. The success of her book has been phenomenal so far and we are excited to see what is next for her.

“As the blurb on the back of the book states, Siobhan’s life has gifted her with an original and unique perspective on the world that translates into the magic and wonder of her powerfully imaginative stories which are all contained within The Magic Book.

“She doesn’t let her learning disability hold her back in any way. She has an amazingly positive attitude to life and her creative talents never cease to amaze us every day.

“I want to pay tribute to Gerri Hunter for everything she has done to help and encourage Siobhan throughout this journey. They made a great team together. Siobhan was delighted to be able to hold the launch event before Gerri’s retirement at the end of October after 46 years of service to the Northern Trust.”

The Magic Book is available to purchase for £10 by contacting Newtownabbey Base.
