Rural carers event in Dervock marks beginning of Carers Week 2025

The Northern Health and Social Care Trust is holding a ‘cuppa and a catch-up’ for carers from rural communities in Dervock Community Centre on Monday 9 June, marking the start of Carers Week 2025.

Over a third of all carers in Northern Ireland live in rural areas, which can make it more difficult to access local services and support.

With this in mind, Claire Campbell, the Northern Trust’s Carer Coordinator, and Yvonne Carson, Rural Health and Wellbeing Manager, have teamed up for this special morning tea event from 10.30am, which includes musical entertainment by Reverb.

Carers Week aims to raise awareness about caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities. According to Carers NI, unpaid carers save the health and social care system in Northern Ireland £5.8b per year.

Explaining more, Claire said: “Caring for someone is not only physically exhausting, but emotionally stressful and these pressures can lead to many carers feeling unsupported, isolated and alone.

“The Northern Trust Carer Hub is a central point of contact in our organisation for unpaid family carers and we want to remind people that our support opportunities are available across the Trust, throughout the year.  If you are currently looking after someone, please contact us and we can give you information that will help you.”

Yvonne added: “As a large rural Trust we are committed to improving rural health and wellbeing. We know that rural carers face unique challenges and so I’m delighted to be working with Claire on this initiative. This event will provide some time out from busy, caring roles as well as an opportunity to connect with other carers.”

If you are currently looking after someone as an unpaid carer and would like to attend this free event please book your place by contacting Claire in the Northern Trust Carer Hub by ringing 028 27661210 or email carer.hub@northerntrust.hscni.net before Monday 2 June.
