Marking Baby Loss Awareness Week in the Northern Trust

The Northern Health and Social Care Trust is marking Baby Loss Awareness Week with a number of special events and initiatives.

The annual campaign provides an opportunity to remember much-loved babies who have gone too soon.

A Service of Remembrance will take place on Sunday 5 October at 2.30pm in Portstewart Presbyterian Church. This event is open to all those who have experienced a loss in pregnancy, or the death of a baby or child. We will have a tree of remembrance where you will be able to hang a small tribute and an opportunity to view the book of remembrance.

Butterfly walls will be located in the Garden of Remembrance at Bush House, Antrim Area Hospital, on Wednesday 8 October from 11am – 1pm and 6pm – 7.30pm and outside the main entrance at Causeway Hospital on Thursday 9 October from 11am -1pm and 6pm – 8.30pm. If you have experienced a loss in pregnancy, or the death of a baby or child, come along to place a butterfly on the wall as a symbol of love and remembrance.

On Friday 10 October, the Garden of Remembrance will host a Wave of Light Memory Walk. Please meet at Bush House car park at 6:45pm before the walk begins at 7pm. Small LED candles will be provided to all those taking part.

If you would like your baby’s name read out during the event (whether you are in attendance or not), email Bereavement.SupportMidwife@northerntrust.hscni.net.before 5pm on Thursday 9 October or get in touch if you have any questions.

Bereavement Support Midwife Lesley-Ann Kennedy said: “We’re once again marking Baby Loss Awareness Week with some very special events. From October 9 – 15 look out for blue and pink lights illuminating Causeway Hospital as we openly recognise baby loss and acknowledge its impact on so many families.

“We would invite any mum, dad or family member who has been through a bereavement to get involved throughout the week and hopefully what we have planned will bring some comfort as we remember little ones who have passed away.”

In her role, Lesley-Ann provides extra support to women and families who have experienced a bereavement at any stage while being cared for by our maternity, gynaecology, neonatal or community services.

If you would like to seek help or advice you can self-refer or alternatively, ask your midwife, nurse, community midwife, health visitor or GP.
