The Northern Health and Social Care Trust has held a hugely successful social work taster event at Magherafelt High School.

Around 45 pupils from schools within the Mid-Ulster Rural Learning Partnership attended on the day, giving them an opportunity to meet with social workers, hear from current students about their experiences, and gain valuable insights into this rewarding career path.

The interactive event, organised by the Trust’s social services learning and development team, featured a range of fun and educational activities, including a chance to explore real world scenarios through VR headsets and podcast question and answer sessions with experienced social workers and social work students.

Reflecting on its success, Magherafelt High School teacher Lanet McGinnis said: “It is vital that we provide our young people with the information and knowledge they need as they consider their next steps after school.

“We know that interest in social work as a career continues to grow, and events like this helps us to harness that at an early stage.

“Feedback has been fantastic, and giving people first-hand information from those with experience as both social work students and professionals has been very well received.

“We are very grateful to everyone who supported the initiative, and we hope that it has helped to inspire our social workers of the future.”
