Carrickfergus pensioners encourage peers to embrace digital health

An inspiring couple from Carrickfergus are proving that age is no barrier to embracing digital technology, as they share how the health service’s My Care app has helped them stay on top of their health.

Northern Trust Health and Social Care users Roy (80) and Gloria Lowry (79) have been using the My Care app to access important health information, including appointments and some results. Despite initially feeling unsure about using new technology, the couple say the app has been surprisingly easy to navigate.

“I find the app very easy to use. I don’t consider myself to be very technical, but I have no problems with it at all,” said Mrs Lowry.

“I was able to access some results on the app almost immediately. I didn’t have to wait on the results being sent to my GP, I could see them right away. It saves me from being anxious and worrying. The information comes in quicker and I like that very much. It gives me peace of mind.”

Mr Lowry added: “I like the app very much, I just put my password in, and everything is at my fingertips. I’m eighty years of age and if I can use it anyone can!”

The My Care app was first introduced by health trusts in Northern Ireland in 2023 and since then almost 325,000 citizens have downloaded it. The app helps to improve access to healthcare services and empowers patients to take greater control of their health. By providing secure, easily accessible technology, My Care aims to make managing health information more convenient for people of all ages.

Dr James Nelson, Chief Clinical Information Officer at the Northern Trust, said “Mr and Mrs Lowry’s experience shows that digital health tools can benefit everyone, regardless of age or technical ability. My Care is designed to be user-friendly and accessible, helping patients stay informed and engaged with their care.”

The couple now encourage others in their age group not to be put off by technology.
