Causeway Hospital celebrates 25th anniversary
Causeway Hospital is marking 25 years to the day since it first opened its doors to patients and the local community.
To celebrate the milestone, staff, former colleagues, patients, volunteers, and members of the Causeway Hospital Partnership Forum gathered today for a special anniversary event.
Guests reflected on their memories and experiences from the past quarter century, including the transfer of patients from Coleraine Hospital and Route Hospital in Ballymoney to the new purpose-built acute hospital in 2001.
The occasion also provided an opportunity to look to the future, as the Trust published an update on progress against the ambitions set out in the Strategic Vision for Causeway Hospital.
First published in March 2024, the Vision reaffirms the Trust’s commitment to the long-term future of Causeway Hospital and its important role within Northern Ireland’s acute hospital network.
Two years on, significant progress has been made, including:
- A £1.8M investment in ambulatory (same-day) care pathways
- The opening of a new £2M MRI scanner
- The appointment of the hospital’s first Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP)
- The introduction of a new 24/7 mental health liaison service within the Emergency Department
Chief Executive Suzanne Pullins, said: “Over the past two years, we have been working hard to deliver on our Vision for Causeway, ensuring the hospital not only continues to provide excellent care, but that its services grow and develop to meet the needs of our local population.
“I know how much Causeway Hospital means to this community and I know that people care deeply about its future. That is something we share.
“Causeway Hospital has a proud past but, more importantly, it has a strong, confident and ambitious future, and we remain committed to shaping that future together with the community we serve.”
Causeway Hospital has also become a leading example of sustainability in healthcare. It is home to the largest solar PV installation on a health and social care building in Northern Ireland, and one of the largest rooftop solar installations on the island of Ireland.
This investment represents an important step towards reducing energy costs and improving efficiency, while also reflecting the Trust’s wider commitment to environmental responsibility. Located in close proximity to the Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the hospital recognises the importance of protecting and preserving the local environment for future generations.
