Women encouraged to attend for cervical screening
Women across the Northern Trust are being encouraged to attend their cervical screening appointment when invited.
Shauna McMillan, a Gynaecological Oncology nurse with the Northern Trust is highlighting the vital role screening plays in preventing cervical cancer.
Speaking during Cervical Screening Awareness Week, Shauna said: “While screening is not a test for cancer, it can detect cell changes that could lead to the disease.
“Screening checks for the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus responsible for almost all cases of cervical cancer which is treatable.
“The most important thing to know is that cervical cancer is very preventable, so when you’re called for your screening, please attend.
“Even if you feel healthy and have no symptoms, screening remains vital because cell changes are often not noticeable.
“We know that sometimes women can put off screening for many different reasons, but I want to reassure you that it is a quick and routine test in a supportive environment.”
Outlining eligibility for screening, Shauna said: “Women aged between 25-49 are invited for screening every three years, women aged 50– 64 are invited every five years.”
