Clinical research

Our Research and Development department supports and promotes high quality clinical research for the health benefits of our population and to play their part in the delivery of research studies, and to align with the regional Research and Development strategy.

We support and facilitate researchers to undertake high quality research and to ensure participants, researchers and staff adhere to the UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research.

Our Research and Development service is directed mainly at the following groups:

  • external researchers, applicants and/or sponsors of health research studies
  • staff who wish to conduct studies related to their own area of interest
  • Members of the public who may wish to get involved in health research related activity

The team works closely with researchers from the Ulster University  and Queen’s University as well as developing collaborative working with two research network partners, Northern Ireland Clinical Research Network (NICRN) and Northern Ireland Cancer Trials Network (NICTN).

Clinical trials and open studies

Our main clinical specialities for clinical trials are:

  • Cancer
  • Mental Health
  • Cardiology/Diabetes
  • Renal
  • Gastrointestinal
  • Critical care
  • Stroke
  • Respiratory

A list of current and open studies can be accessed by contacting the research team.

We encourage public participation in research, and this means involving people in all aspects of the research process as partners rather than as research subjects.

We work closely with the Research Division of the Public Health Agency and with the Health Research Authority
