Shared Decision Making
Shared Decision Making (SDM) is a process whereby patients, carers and healthcare professionals make decisions together.
We do this to help deliver more effective health services, personalise care and deliver better outcomes for patients.
Making decisions together helps to ensure that tests and treatments are jointly chosen based on evidence and what matters to the person, their individual goals, preferences, beliefs and values. It also helps patients understand the risks, benefits and possible consequences of different options, through discussion and information sharing.
