Direct Assessment Units
The Direct Assessment Unit is an alternative pathway for General Practitioners (GPs), Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS), Emergency Department (ED) and specialist nurses helping to reduce/prevent hospital admissions, and attendance of inappropriate patients at the Emergency Department.
GPs can speak directly with medical staff at the Direct Assessment Unit to receive specialist advice and, if required, arrange for a referral to the Unit for assessment, diagnostics and management.
The Northern Trust has a Direct Assessment Unit at Antrim Area Hospital, and a Frailty Direct Assessment Unit at Causeway Hospital.
Access to the Units is by referral only. Patients can arrive at the Direct Assessment Unit up until 5pm.
