Acute Occupational Therapy

Acute Occupational Therapy services deliver a range of both inpatient and outpatient services across a number of hospital and community facilities. The overall aim is to promote independence and improve quality of life through participation in meaningful activities.

Inpatient services

Inpatient Occupational Therapy services are provided across three sites – Antrim Area Hospital, Causeway Hospital and Whiteabbey Hospital.

Occupational therapists in the acute hospital setting complete comprehensive, client-centered and timely assessment and treatment of all patients referred to the service.

This includes motor, sensory, cognitive, perceptual, psychosocial and environmental components which impact the patient’s ability to function and perform activities of daily living.

Following intervention, the occupational therapist will make recommendations to assist and progress safe and timely discharge. Referrals are accepted from all members of the multi-disciplinary team for patients who are experiencing functional deficits or difficulties as a result of illness, injury or the ageing process.

Outpatient services

Occupational therapists also provide a range of outpatient services in a number of clinical specialty areas. These include rheumatology, hand injuries and neurology.

Acute outpatient occupational therapy services are delivered in a range of facilities across the Trust.
