Mental Health Liaison Service

Our Mental Health Liaison Service provides specialist mental health assessments to patients who are presenting harmful behaviour towards themselves or others.

Patients who attend the emergency department in Antrim Area Hospital and Causeway Hospital will be directed to the Mental Health Liaison Service, if it is thought they may be struggling with their mental health. The result is a more timely assessment and the availability of specialist expertise to support the treatment and management of patients with mental health problems.

By supporting ward teams, it is expected that the patients stay in hospital will be reduced by enhancing discharge planning. Through early intervention and detection of delirium, depression, other mental health problems and dementia, particularly experienced in old age, the team supports early recovery and discharge from hospital.

We accept referrals from our emergency departments and hospital wards centrally at Antrim Area and Causeway hospitals.

The Mental Health Liaison Service is available 24 hours a day.
