Research and development helps us make sure our health and social care services are high quality and based on the latest and best evidence.
Our Research and Development Team supports and encourages clinical research to improve the health of our population. The Team also plays an important role in delivering research projects that follow the Northern Ireland Research and Development Strategy.
We help and support researchers to carry out high-quality research. The team also makes sure that everyone involved—participants, researchers, and staff—follows the UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research.
The team works with
- External researchers, applicants and/or sponsors of health research studies
- Staff who wish to conduct studies related to their own area of interest
- Members of the public who may wish to get involved in health-related research activity
We also work closely with researchers from the Ulster University, and Queen’s University, as well as two research network partners, the Northern Ireland Clinical Research Network and Northern Ireland Cancer Trials Network.

We encourage people to take part in research, which means involving them as partners at every stage of the research, not just as participants.
We work closely with the Research Division of the Public Health Agency and Health Research Authority.
