Emergency stroke treatment

Prompt treatment can significantly improve outcomes after stroke.

Thrombolysis (Clot-Busting Treatment)

Thrombolysis is a specialist treatment used to dissolve blood clots that cause an ischaemic stroke. It may be suitable for selected patients who present within an appropriate treatment window and have no other contraindications.

This service is available:

  • 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in Antrim Area Hospital and Causeway Hospital

Thrombectomy (Mechanical Clot Retrieval)

A small number of patients may be suitable for thrombectomy, a specialist procedure that removes a blood clot from a blood vessel in the brain. Patients who meet the clinical criteria will be transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital for assessment and treatment if appropriate.

The regional thrombectomy service currently operates:

  • 7 days per week
  • 8:00am to 6:00pm
