A new referral pathway enabling GPs, practice nurses and pharmacists to directly refer patients for an ‘asthma in a box’ diagnosis test at Causeway Hospital has successfully supported more than 100 patients.

The recently established Ambulatory team introduced the change to improve access to Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) testing. This quick, easy and painless breath test helps people with suspected asthma receive an accurate diagnosis and enables them to start appropriate treatment, which is provided in an “Asthma Box” containing their combination inhaler and patient education information.

Since its launch at the end of last year, the service has welcomed more than 100 patients, providing valuable diagnostic information to guide treatment decisions and helping to ensure patients receive the most appropriate care for their condition.

Dr James Cannie, Consultant Respiratory Physician at Causeway Hospital, said: “Reaching 100 patients in a relatively short period of time is a significant achievement for the team.

“FeNO testing provides important clinical information that can support diagnosis and treatment decisions, helping patients receive the correct treatment. The direct referral route has strengthened collaboration between primary and secondary care and improved the patient experience.”

Charlie McMullan, GP Practice Pharmacist with Portrush and Castlerock (Liffock) Health Centres, said: “The referral process was incredibly straightforward and efficient. Our patient had presented with symptoms suggestive of asthma, so we used the new referral pathway, and they received their diagnosis and follow-up treatment without delay.

“This a very important development for our patients and the wider community.”
