Video link: TinyGym developmental play routine
In this short video, I’m going to show you the routine that we do at our Tiny Gym group every month. All you’ll need is a firm surface, such as a blanket or a mat on the floor. Pick a time when your baby is awake, alert, and settled.
We are going to start with two songs lying on baby’s back.
Aim to position baby with their head in the middle looking up at you. You can also place baby’s legs up onto your legs, which will make it easier to reach hands to knees.
Heads and shoulders, knees and toes. Knees and toes.

Knees and toes and eyes and ears and mouth and nose. Heads, shoulders, knees and toes.

Next, we are going to move into side lying.
Guide your baby over onto their side and support them in this position, and repeat on the other side.
Round and round the garden like a teddy bear.
One step, two step, tickle you under there.
Round and round the forest like a baby deer.

Moving onto tummy time. Help your baby to roll over.
Have the lower arm by their head so it doesn’t get stuck, and help them at their hips. Repeat to the other side.
The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round.
The wheels on the bus go round and round all day long.
The wipers on the bus go swish, swish, swish, swish, swish, swish, swish, swish, swish. The wipers on the bus go swish, swish, swish, all day long.
In sitting, either sit your baby in front of you on the floor or on your lap and support them at their back.
Baker’s man. Bake me a cake as fast as you can.
Pat it, roll it and mark it with B.
Put itin the oven for baby and me.
Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake baker’s man.
Bake me a cake as fast as you can.
Pat it, roll it and mark it with B. Put it in the oven for baby and me.
Support your baby around their back with some support behind their head if needed.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily. Life is but a dream.
Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream.
If you see a crocodile, don’t forget to scream.
Rock, rock, rock your boat gently to the shore.
If you see a lion, don’t forget to roar.
Don’t worry if you do not get the whole routine completed.
It is okay to just pick a few songs or positions to begin with.
You will find as your baby gets bigger, you will be able to complete the whole routine. Most importantly, playing on the floor with your baby should be fun.
You can sing along to the nursery rhymes. Your baby loves hearing your voice.
