How effective is the flu vaccine?
The flu vaccine is the best protection against flu. Although no vaccine offers 100% protection, it significantly reduces your risk of becoming seriously ill, needing hospital treatment or developing complications from flu.
Some people may still catch flu after vaccination, but symptoms are usually milder.
How does the vaccine work?
The flu vaccine helps your body build protection against flu, but this can take up to two weeks.
As flu viruses change each year and protection reduces over time, getting vaccinated every year offers the best protection.
Can the vaccine give me flu?
No. The flu vaccine cannot give you flu. It helps protect you from flu and reduces your risk of becoming seriously ill.
What are the side effects?
Most people have no problems after their flu vaccine.
Common side effects are mild and usually get better within one or two days:
- Soreness where the injection was given
- A slight temperature
- Aching muscles
Serious allergic reactions are very rare and vaccination staff are trained to deal with them immediately.
Can I have it with other vaccines?
You can have the flu vaccine at the same time as other vaccines such as the COVID-19 and shingles vaccines.
It’s not usually given at the same time as the RSV vaccine, but you can have them at the same time if a doctor or nurse thinks it’s needed.
You cannot have the vaccine if you’ve had a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous dose of the vaccine or an ingredient in the vaccine.
Who should not have the vaccine?
The flu vaccine should not be given to those who have had a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous flu vaccine.
Most people with a serious allergy to hens’ eggs can now be given a flu vaccine but you need to discuss this or any other serious allergies with your midwife or doctor.
Why do I need it every year?
Flu protection only lasts for one flu season, so it is important to get vaccinated every flu season.
Should I get vaccinated if I’m feeling unwell?
If you have a high temperature, wait until you’re feeling better before having your flu vaccine.
