Functional neurological disorder

Functional neurological disorder is a condition where there is a problem with how the brain sends and receives signals, rather than physical damage to the brain’s structure.

Think of the brain like a computer: With functional neurological disorder (FND), the brain’s structure is working normally, but the signals it sends and receives are not working as they should. The symptoms are genuine, happen without the person’s control, and can have a major impact on daily life.

Scans are usually normal: Tests such as MRI and CT scans often do not show any problems because FND affects how the brain and nervous system communicate, rather than causing physical damage.
