The Northern Trust Adult Eating Disorder Service is a community outpatient service for adults who have a primary diagnosis of an Eating Disorder Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Atypical Eating Disorder (mixed presentation).
This specialist eating disorder service is targeted to those who present with a severe and complex eating disorders and who have had some prior intervention for their eating disorder carried out by a community mental health team or equivalent.
The team has mental health nurses, an occupational therapist, a social worker, a psychologist, a dietician and a specialist regional consultant psychiatrist.
The service has a role in training and consultation with other professionals involved in the treatment of eating disorders.
Where an eating disorder co-exists with another diagnosis, the Eating Disorder Service may co-work with other professionals for a limited period.

The Eating Disorder Service provides care and treatments including:
- Maudsley Model for the management of Anorexia Nervosa (MANTRA)
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Enhanced (CBTE)
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- Interpersonal therapy
- Motivational therapy
- Body image work
- Physical monitoring in conjunction with GP or community mental health team
- Wellness and Recovery Action Planning (WRAP)
- Psychoeducation

How to access the service
If you think you or someone you know has an eating disorder, the first step is to visit your GP.
Your GP will carry out a thorough assessment to rule out any other medical cause for your symptoms. They will then refer to a community mental health team and Eating Disorder Service for assessment and treatment.
