Work on a major £2.1M refurbishment project at the Robinson Hospital is progressing at pace, with the improved facilities expected to re-open to patients in summer 2027.

The refurbishment project has been made possible thanks to Robinson Hospital Charitable Trust Funds, and funding held privately by the Robinson Board of Trustees.

Construction work got underway in May 2026 which includes a new build extension to the existing hospital, with a multi-disciplinary room, staff base, and a new plant room. The scheme will increase the number of ensuite bedrooms within the 21-bedded hospital from two to eight, providing an enhanced level of privacy and dignity for service users.

The extension will also follow dementia-friendly design principles to improve outcomes and experiences for patients, with input from service users and their families.

Acknowledging the importance of the refurbishment, Diane Spence, Director Adult Community and Older People Services with the Northern Trust said: “The project represents an important investment in the future of the hospital and the services it provides, ensuring the facilities continue to meet the needs of the community for years to come.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Robinson Memorial Hospital Trust. This refurbishment would not have been possible without their support, and we want to put on record our sincere appreciation.”

Jacqui Armstrong, Director of Allied Health Professionals, Intermediate Care and Integrated Discharge, added: “We are delighted with the progress that has been achieved so far and look forward to seeing further development over the next number of months.

“We have no doubt that the refurbished facilities will greatly enhance the service we can provide to our service users.”

Visiting the project last week, Hugh Clarke, Vice President of the Board of Robinson Memorial Hospital Trust, which manages the endowment left by Samuel Robinson, founder of the Robinson Hospital, said: “We are incredibly proud to be able to support the hospital with this investment. The Robinson Hospital is a vital part of our community, and these improvement works will greatly benefit patients.”
