Rathmoyle Resource Centre in Ballycastle has marked a major milestone as it celebrates 50 years of providing support, opportunities and friendship for adults with learning disabilities across Ballycastle, the Glens and surrounding communities.
The anniversary celebrations brought together service users, families, staff, volunteers and supporters to reflect on five decades of care, inclusion and achievement, while looking forward to an exciting future.
Since its establishment, Rathmoyle has evolved from a traditional day service into a modern, person-centred resource centre that promotes independence, confidence, choice and inclusion.
Today, the centre offers a wide range of programmes and activities designed to help people develop skills, build friendships and play an active role in their communities.
The centre has undergone significant transformation in recent years, including a major refurbishment and redevelopment programme that created modern, accessible facilities. The addition of The Base to the Rathmoyle site has further enhanced opportunities for service users by bringing services together and strengthening community connections.
Speaking at the special anniversary event, Pat Brown, Manager of Rathmoyle Resource Centre, said it was a privilege to be involved in such a remarkable story: “Marking 50 years of Rathmoyle is an opportunity to reflect on where we have come from while celebrating the people, achievements and community spirit that have made Rathmoyle such a special place over the years.”
Since first opening its doors, Rathmoyle has expanded its offering far beyond traditional day services. Service users now participate in activities including arts and crafts, music, gardening, cooking, fitness programmes and community projects, all of which promote wellbeing, personal development and social inclusion.
Sport has also played an important role in the life of the centre, with service users achieving notable success in snooker competitions, demonstrating determination, skill and sportsmanship.
Another significant achievement has been Rathmoyle’s role as the pilot site for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Joint Award Initiative within the Northern Health and Social Care Trust. The initiative provides service users with opportunities to gain nationally recognised awards, develop practical skills, volunteer within their communities and build confidence.
Pat added: “We are proud to be a place that continually embraces new opportunities for the people we support. Becoming the pilot site for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Joint Award Initiative reflects our commitment to ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to achieve their full potential, regardless of ability.”
During the celebrations, tribute was paid to the many staff, volunteers, families and carers who have contributed to Rathmoyle’s success over the past five decades.
Pat said: “Our greatest strength has always been our people. We are fortunate to have dedicated staff, supportive families, committed volunteers and a welcoming community who work together to create opportunities and enrich lives every day. Their contribution has helped make Rathmoyle the special place it is today.”
The event also provided an opportunity to remember former service users, staff, volunteers, family members and friends whose contributions helped shape Rathmoyle’s history and legacy.
Looking ahead, Rathmoyle remains committed to embracing innovative approaches that place individuals at the centre of decision-making, while continuing to promote independence, education, community participation and personal achievement.
Pat concluded: “While we are proud of everything that has been achieved over the last 50 years, we are equally excited about the future. Rathmoyle will continue to be guided by the values of compassion, dignity, respect, inclusion and opportunity for all. We look forward to building on that legacy for generations to come.”
