An adult can be referred to the Adult Autism Service if there are concerns that they may be experiencing difficulties linked to autism. Some people may also have a learning disability.
The person must give their permission before a referral can be made.
What happens after a referral?
- Once we receive a referral, our clinical team will review the information to check if an autism assessment is suitable.
- We will then send a letter to let you know if you have been added to the waiting list and give an estimate of how long you may need to wait.
- When an appointment becomes available, we will contact you to arrange an assessment.
- Your information will be kept private and stored securely on our electronic system (Encompass). It will only be accessed by staff who need to see it. You can read more in our Protecting and using your information section.
- In some cases, we may contact other health professionals involved in your care to gather more information.
The assessment process
An autism assessment usually takes place over a number of weeks. During this time, you will meet with different members of our team.
The process has several stages, which we will explain to you (and your family, if appropriate). We aim to make the assessment a positive experience and will use approaches that suit your needs.
What the assessment involves
The assessment usually includes:
- A conversation with you about your experiences
- Talking to a family member (if possible) about your early development
- An observational assessment, where the team looks at your strengths and any areas you may find difficult while you take part in activities. This forms an important part of the assessment process.
If you would feel more comfortable having a carer or family member with you during appointments, we will try to support this.
After the assessment
Once the assessment is complete, the team will review all the information and make a decision based on their professional judgement.
You (and your family, if appropriate) will be invited to a feedback session. At this appointment, we will explain the findings of the assessment, the decision regarding diagnosis, and answer any questions. You will also receive a written report.
Possible outcomes
There are three possible outcomes:
- A diagnosis of autism
- No diagnosis of autism
- An unclear result, where more information or further assessment may be needed
