Carer Hub

The Northern Trust Carer Hub is your central point of contact for information, advice, and support. We help carers connect with local services and access the guidance they need.

Who is a carer?

A carer is someone who provides regular, unpaid care and support to a family member, friend, or neighbour who could not manage without their help.

You may be a carer if you support someone who is ill, has a disability, experiences mental health difficulties, or is affected by alcohol or drug use.

  • Carers can be any age, including children and young people
  • You do not need to live with the person you care for
  • You do not need to be their only carer or a close relative
  • You do not need to receive Carer’s Allowance or any other benefits

Young carers

Young carers are children and young people who help care for someone at home.

This may include supporting someone who:

  • Is unwell or has a long-term condition
  • Has a disability
  • Experiences mental health difficulties
  • Has issues with alcohol or drug use

If you live in the Northern Trust area, Barnardo’s NI Young Carer’s Service offers dedicated support.

They provide:

  • A listening ear and emotional support
  • Opportunities to take a break from caring responsibilities
  • Access to group activities and social opportunities
  • A chance to connect with other young carers

These services help reduce isolation and support young carers to reach their full potential.

Named worker

If you or the person you care for is known to services, you will have a named worker.

This could be a:

  • Social worker
  • Community support worker
  • Specialist nurse
  • Occupational therapist

Your named worker:

  • Understands your individual situation
  • Is the first point of contact for any concerns
  • Can assess changes and provide appropriate support
