The Day Rehabilitation Unit (DRU) is an outpatient service that provides assessment and treatment to help improve your health and independence.
The service is mainly for older people living in the local community. Our aim is to:
- Support your health and wellbeing
- Help you stay independent at home
- Reduce your risk of falls
Our Team
You may meet different members of our team, including:
- Doctors and consultants
- Nurses
- Physiotherapists
- Occupational therapists
- Domestic assistants
- Reception staff
Your first visit
Your first appointment will focus on understanding your needs.
- You may see one or more members of the team
- The appointment usually takes around 2 hours
- Any follow-up visits will depend on your assessment
What to bring
Please bring:
- Your walking aid (if you use one)
- An up-to-date list of your medication
- A urine sample
What to wear
Please wear:
- Comfortable clothing
- Flat, supportive shoes
This will help us assess your movement safely.
What we will assess
We will look at how you manage day-to-day activities and your physical health.
This may include:
- How you walk, move and balance
- Your muscle strength
- Any history or fear of falling
- How you manage your medication
- Safety in your home environment
- How you manage daily tasks like: Dressing, cooking and housework.
We may also carry out some clinical checks, such as:
- Blood pressure
- Blood tests
- X-rays (if needed)
What happens next?
After your assessment, we will agree a plan with you. This may include:
- Equipment to help you move more safely (for example, a walking aid)
- A home exercise programme to improve strength and balance
- Advice on staying safe at home
- Information about medication or treatment
- Referral to other services if needed
