Our emergency departments are open 24 hours a day for the assessment and treatment of serious and potentially life-threatening conditions and urgent illnesses.

How to contact us
For serious or life-threatening illness or injury – call 999 or go to your nearest emergency department.
For urgent, non‑life‑threatening conditions, please use our Phone First Service to help you get the right care without unnecessary waiting in an emergency department. Phone First operates Monday to Friday, from 8:00am to 6:00pm, excluding bank holidays.
Phone First service update
The Phone First service in the Northern Trust area will be stood down on Friday 27 November 2026.
Those needing urgent medical advice or treatment should continue to follow urgent care pathways. Contact your community pharmacy, GP or GP out of hours service, or attend an Emergency Department if appropriate.
In an emergency, always call 999.
Direct Assessment Units
The Northern Trust has two Direct Assessment Units that provide same-day care for people with urgent health concerns. Patients can be referred to the service for assessment, diagnosis and treatment, and many can return home the same day without needing to attend an emergency department or be admitted to hospital. Referrals can be made by GPs, the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and hospital clinicians.
