Falls and fractures are common in older people and can have a serious impact on health and wellbeing. A fall can lead to pain, injury, and a loss of confidence and independence.
- Around 1 in 3 people aged 65 and over will have a fall each year
- For people aged over 80, this increases to 1 in 2
- Falls are the most common reason older people are admitted to hospital
Falls can happen for many reasons, including health conditions, medication, or hazards in the home. However, falls are not a normal part of ageing, and many can be prevented.
Falls risk assessment (screening)
If you have fallen, or feel at risk of falling, you can be offered a falls risk assessment.
This looks at both you and your home environment to help reduce your risk of future falls and support you to stay independent.
The Falls Screening Service is available for anyone over the age of 65 who:
- Has had a fall
- Feels unsteady
- Is worried about falling
If needed, the team can also refer you to other services for further support.
What happens during an assessment
The assessment will help to:
- Understand what happened and why you may have fallen
- Identify any risk factors (for example, health, balance, or home safety)
- Agree a plan with you to help reduce your risk of falling again
You will also be given advice about bone health, as falls are a leading cause of broken bones in older people.
Our aim
The service aims to help you:
- Stay safe and independent
- Continue doing the things that matter to you
- Improve your confidence and wellbeing
The team works with a range of services, including health, social care, and voluntary organisations.
