Our Minor Injuries Units are staffed by highly experienced emergency department nurse practitioners with advanced training in assessing, diagnosing and treating a wide range of injuries.
We provide a Minor Injuries Service at:
- Antrim Area Hospital
- Causeway Hospital, Coleraine
- Mid Ulster Hospital, Magherafelt.
Types of injuries that we treat
Minor injuries units treat injuries that not critical or life-threatening, helping you get treatment quickly without attending an emergency department.
We can assess and treat a range of minor injuries, including:
- Suspected broken bones – from the shoulder to the hand, or from the knee to the toes
- Sprains and strains
- Minor facial injuries – for example, bruising or possible broken nose – with no loss of consciousness
- Wounds and injuries to the skin – for example, cuts, grazes, bites (not human bites), scalp lacerations
- Minor scalds and burns
- Ring removal
- Plaster of Paris (cast) problems
- Foreign objects – In the skin (for example, splinters) and in the eyes, ears or nose
- Minor head injuries (under 65s only) – You must be fully conscious, not have lost consciousness at any time, be free from symptoms such as headache, vomiting, drowsiness or confusion, and not taking blood-thinning medication
When this service is not suitable
Minor injuries units are not suitable for:
- Older adults with complex medical needs
- People with a history of repeated falls
- Anyone taking blood-thinning medication (for example, Warfarin or Aspirin)
- Anyone who has experienced blackouts or collapse (syncope) or a fall from height (for example, stairs or ladders)

- Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm
- Who can attend: Patients aged 5 years and over
