Acute and Outpatient Occupational Therapy

Acute and Outpatient Occupational Therapy services support people in hospital and community settings across the Northern Trust.

Our aim is to help people maintain or regain their independence, recover from illness or injury, and improve their quality of life by supporting them to take part in everyday activities.

Inpatient Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapists provide services at:

  • Antrim Area Hospital
  • Causeway Hospital

We assess and support patients who are experiencing difficulties with everyday activities due to illness, injury or the effects of ageing.

Assessments may look at:

  • Mobility and physical function
  • Hand and arm function
  • Thinking, memory and problem-solving skills
  • Sensory or perceptual difficulties
  • Emotional wellbeing
  • The home environment and support needs

Following assessment, occupational therapists work with patients to develop practical solutions and support their recovery. We also make recommendations to help ensure a safe and timely discharge from hospital.

Referrals can be made by any member of the multidisciplinary team.

Outpatient Occupational Therapy

Our outpatient services provide specialist assessment, treatment and advice for people who do not require a hospital stay.

Services are available at locations across the Trust and include specialist support for a range of conditions, including:

  • Rheumatology
  • Hand injuries and hand therapy
  • Neurological conditions

Treatment is tailored to each person’s individual needs and may include rehabilitation, education, self-management strategies, specialist equipment and advice to support independence.

Our goal

We help people develop the skills, confidence and support they need to carry out everyday activities, recover from illness or injury, and live as independently as possible.
